High School Art Exhibition & Competition

In March 2017 Visual Arts Minnesota will be hanging a regional high school art exhibit at The Paramount Center for the Arts. We are inviting Central MN High School Art students to participate in the program.

$1200 will be awarded to students in 8 categories of consideration as well as multiple best-of-show awards sponsored by local organizations.

Ÿ 2d Design Ÿ 3d Sculpture Ÿ Ceramics Ÿ Drawing Ÿ Jewelry Ÿ Painting Ÿ Photography Ÿ Watercolor

Student artwork needs to be at the Paramount Center for the Arts by March 7th. All submitted work needs to be digitally registered through our website.

  • 2d work is limited to no more than 36” in either dimension. Flat work must be hang-ready. VAM will be offering free framing services to a limited number of students (materials will be offered for a small fee if artist is unable to supply their own) – see below.
  • 3d work needs to fit through a standard commercial personnel door. At least one dimension needs to be less than 30″ in length. Neither the width nor the length can exceed 40″. The height cannot exceed 84″. Artists must provide a proprietary display stand for accepted artwork that would otherwise be unstable when standing alone.

This year we are offering a transportation service of artwork from participating high schools to the Paramount Center for the Arts. Contact us to schedule a time to have us come to your school to pick up registered artwork during the week of February 28th – March 3rd.

Registration and Application Workshops
We will be producing regional workshops at 3 centralized locations the week prior to the submission deadline. The locations of the workshops will include Elk River Public Library, Annandale High School, and Sauk Rapids – Rice High School. At these workshops VAM will provide instruction on framing/matting, documentation, image editing/portfolio management, artist statement instruction and guidance through the online submission process. Space for these workshops will be limited. Students will need to register for them ahead of time. If artwork is ready after the workshops, VAM will take the artwork off the hands of the students.

Workshop instructors will include Heidi Jeub, Jess Levanduski, Maria Thompson, Kat Paton, and others (photographer to be determined).

Submission Limits
Up to 15 individual student works per school.

Juror Process
There will be a jury team of 2 college art students from SCSU and a mentor-juror guiding the student jurors through a selection process. It will take the form of a closed critique and will determine the artists to be recognized with cash awards. Artwork to receive individual sponsored awards will also be selected by the sponsoring organizations.

Run Time
The work will be exhibited at The Paramount Center for the Arts from March 10th – April 10th.

Closing Reception – April 10th, 6-8 PM
There will be a closing reception where local high school musicians will perform ahead of and after an award ceremony and keynote speaker. The reception will also offer an informal critique for the benefit of the exhibiting students. After the reception students will be expected to take their work home with them.
